Huntingtown High School
North Point High School
Wednesday, February 24, 2016-
The North Point Eagles found themselves in a familiar setting Wednesday night. Just a year ago the Eagles had played in the first and only Charles County basketball championship, beating La Plata to win the championship. This year the SMAC Conference established two divisions (Chesapeake and Potomac), having the divisional champions play for the SMAC Conference championship. Huntingtown earned the Chesapeake Divisional Title and North Point earned the Potomac Divisional Title. Earlier this season both teams played the first game of the season; Eagles cruised to a 75-46 victory at Huntingtown. Since the loss to the Eagles, the Hurricanes come into the contest with a 18-4 record, losing only 3 other games.
The Hurricanes came determined and ready to establish themselves as worthy competition within SMAC and for the Eagles. The Easton brothers and Tavares accounted for all 11 points for the Hurricanes 1st quarter points, while the Eagles scored only 8 points (4 NP Players scored).
Seeming non-attentive at times in the 1st quarter, the Eagles showed up in the 2nd quarter, limiting the Hurricanes to 7 points and scoring 17 points. The Eagles led the Hurricanes 25-18 at the half. The 3rd quarter was typical Eagles fashion, playing smart basketball to build upon the lead. Leading the Hurricanes 43-34 at the end of the 3rd quarter, the Eagles began to smell blood and adding another SMAC championship to the program’s rich history. However, Huntingtown knew they could compete with the Eagles seeing the big men for North Point were in foul trouble with 4 fouls a piece going into the 4th quarter.
The Hurricanes were a force to be reckoned with in the 4th quarter. And the Eagles continued to do more harm to themselves than good. The Eagles were plagued with self-inflicted turnovers. The Hurricanes capitalized on the Eagles turnovers late in the 4th cutting the Eagles lead to 4 points (52-48) with less than 41 seconds. Both teams were in the bonus and it would come down to who made their free throws. The Eagles looked efficient from the free throw line, adding to the lead 54-48. Huntingtown continued to attack the basket and it afforded them a goal-tending call and a foul. The Eagles lead was now by 3 (54-51). The Eagles got one final trip to the line and made both freethrows. The Eagles held off the Hurricanes 56-51.
Eagles highlighted stats: Jr G, Williams (10) 12pts 6rebs, 2blks, Jr G, Gibbs (2) 10pts, 2asts, 2stls, Sr F, McManus (33) 10pts, 6rebs, 2asts, Sr G, Gilliam (20) 10pts, 6rebs, 6asts, 1stl, and Sr F, Bryant (44) had 5 of the 9 Eagles blocks.
